Members of the Kiwanis Club of Coral Gables are turning up the heat on their participation at community events while cooking up a storm with their new portable grill.
These "Grillin' Kiwanians" enjoy serving up home-style backyard favorites like hot dogs, hamburgers, sausages and chicken at family-oriented events, such as the recent 4th of July Independence Day celebration at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables.
Have Grill Will Travel
Kiwanis members enjoy having fun and helping kids," said Robert Burr, club president. "One of our favorite activities is outdoor cooking and we're planning to participate in a number of events and festivals throughout South Florida in the coming months. We can tow our new custom-made grill just about anywhere at anytime to feed a large crowd."
Money raised through the sale of food specialties helps to fund a number of ongoing youth programs such as boy scouts and girl scouts, Key Clubs at the high schools, horses for handicapped children, a Christmas party for migrant students in Homestead, foster care review, special toys for blind babies and other worthy causes in the community.
80 Years of Service
The members have been meeting at the country club of Coral Gables every Tuesday for lunch since it was chartered in May, 1926. More than a dozen members have been active in this club for 25 years or more, including a handful like Frank Poe of Poe's Hardware and Rentals, for more than 50 years. Another dozen members have joined in the past three months.
"Our club is growing," said president Burr. "Energetic community service clubs like ours appeal to civic-minded individuals and couples that want to have fun and support great programs benefiting kids."
